"It is hard to separate your knee and who you are as an athlete," said Carey, who is the director of Penn Center for Advanced Cartilage Repair in Philadelphia. "How well you recover may be related to strength and psychological confidence. Sometimes, it is 18 months before a player forgets about which knee it was that was operated on."
